As I get ready to retire for the night I start thinking to myself. I sure do enjoy sleeping. I'm pretty sure most people enjoy sleep and get temperamental when they don't get as much as normal. When SHTF or when we live in a sustained WROL environment; sleep will be a luxury. Lets think about it, if its all out chaos, somebody will have to be on guard. Not only that but you will have to wake up earlier in the day just to operate in the sunlight. I don't plan on using all my heating and light preps so I can work during the night. Can you handle a lack of sleep? Can you handle the mass's with out a lack of sleep. Will we see a more primitive and violent side of humanity? I have seen weak soldiers break down and move like zombies (old school) because they only got three to four hours a night for a week. Now it's there guard shift and they fall asleep, it could end in disaster. What do you think sleep will be like in WROL or a short term SHTF scenario? Will we just get used to sleeping less? Post your ideas, how you plan on dealing with it.
(I will do a more in depth post on sleep, guard shifts and such down the road. This idea just crossed my mind and I thought I should write about it before forgetting.)
Greetings Squirrel.
ReplyDeleteWhen a person sleeps outside for longer than a week something happens to them. They become more alert during their sleep and will wake from sounds and smells. Even if it is just for a moment to assess the situation and return to sleep.
I thought this was just a myth until I actually tried it and I can say that it really does happen.
I also think that people will come together and form communities that will take turns keeping watch which will make sleeping much easier. The ones that go off alone will really struggle with this.
Nice start on your blog!
Sleep is one of the few things you cannot stock up on; it is a daily requirement. Sleep deprivation causes the same degradation of cognitive ability as drinking alcohol. Most people need 8-10 hours a night to be at their prime but can function at a lower level on 4-6 hours a night for a few days. After that, you quickly go down hill. A sleep plan for sustained ops is a must. Even the Army, whose members are continually sleep deprived, ensures that paratroopers get eight hours of rest before an airborne operation. It is that important.
ReplyDelete@firefly 5555 thanks. yeah living in groups or resorting back to clan or tribal stage might help out a lot.
ReplyDelete@SGM97B thanks for posting. Hopefully groups can figure out how to do their sleep plans and not be selfish or sleep through their shifts. Of course a battle buddy to kick you in the head if you do helps out too.
Definitely something to think about. Great post.
ReplyDeleteBeing your mom I know how much you need your sleep. You were a real pain in the butt when you were tired....
ReplyDeleteThis is a big concern for me. I left a great career of 20 years due to rotating shifts. I cannot function on a graveyard shift and need a minimum 7 hours. It's only my husband and me. Hopefully my dogs (9&10 years old) will still be alert to noises, etc...
